Plane spotting

Ok folks, I know there is at least one more PuT and one spotter .

Come out of your hidings and do tell where, what do you like the most, what gear do you use etc.

As for me - not long ago I started training towards PPL. Got it suspended due to medical history and problems with paperwork, but now everything is ok, so I shall resume it shortly.

Spotting-wise - I usually go to three airports. EGNF, EGNX, EGCC. My favourite shitholes . Was in Doncaster once, but not even single plane flew in few hours! It was nice ride though .

The gear I use - Nikon D5100 + Nikkor 70-300mm. Seems to be ok for now, but lens was too short fot the airshow like RIAT.

Currently at the Ohio State University Flight Training Clinic, I am here with the sole reason of obtaining the highest level of pilot certifications...the Airline Transport License.

I start full time flying/ground schooling - Monday to Friday in May. After my course is complete, I will have the following certifications:

Private Pilots License
Instrument Rating
Multi-engine Rating
Commercial Pilots License
Certified Flight Instructor - Single Engine
Certified Flight Instructor - Multi-engine
Certified Flight Instructor - Instrument

I'll be getting MCC in conjunction with my ATPL, this flight school offers CFI jobs to their graduates. So once i've instructed for a few years and built up my hours i'll pay for my ATPL

Well, i'll be going from an M1 student visa to a 3 year working visa, which will give me plenty of time to build hours.

Their CFI's are full time averaging between 150 - 200 hours per month. So, say i'm a CFI for the full 3 years averaging the lower end of hours per month:

150 (hours) x 12 (months) = 1800
1800 (hours) x 3 (years) = 5400

So the minimum hours that airlines expect before applying to them is 1500, I know as a knew CFI I won't average that, but even still after the three years I will be well over, if not double the minimum requirements and very hireable

Plain spotter, usually EGBB, also air traffic communications listener. List of cameras and equipment far too long to list,

And you would be absolutely right. Their whole fleet is mainly Dash-8's and Boeing 737's

As aviation enthusiasts you probably already know that there are a few apps out there for smart phones that can help with tracking civil aircraft, the one I use occasionally is Plane Finder, information and website here: http://planefinder.net/
Just thought someone may find it useful.

I use Flightradar24 Pro. With it you can track any commercial flight anywhere. It also can do aircraft lookups, displays track, flight number, speed, alt. Displays details of the plane flying including registration and images. Also has an augmented reality feature where you can point your camera at an aircraft in the air and get the flight details of that plane. Rather cool for aero-geeks like me lol

Same as Plane Finder... you can also see commercial airports and see what flights are expected in plus see what has been in the air over the past few days. They are very good apps for folk who like to see things fly. I live below Doncaster's fly out corridor for anything heading west or south and the high altitude north south corridor; on a clear day in the summer when I ain't out on the bike its nice to keep an eye on what's up there.... Geek!

In addition to Flight Radar, I like to listen to Live ATC. Shame we don't have UK frequencies, but you can't have everything

I also used to build RC planes out of balsa wood, with nitro engines. They were fun to fly .

I could, its just a matter of scale. But to be honest there are loads of self build kits available with full instructions, all you need are a few simple tools and you could build your own for a lot less than having someone build it for you. Electric guitars are relatively easy to make as the sound comes from pickups with only limited sonic qualities coming from the guitar body.

Have you got something in mind?

I did, till I seen it done already. I want something unique, but haven't had the eureka moment yet.

Keep looking mate, there are loads of ideas out there. Look at some of the guitars made from found objects, these start with cigarbox guitars and to be honest no one has got to the end yet. As long as you have the correct distance between the nut and the bridge for the neck you are using or making then you can make an electric guitar out of almost anything (although jelly and custard can present a problem). I have a load of photos on the Scrapyard Guitar Facebook page and I keep finding new ones.
